Time is right to switch Manchester United's tactical setup - Amorim states.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple senior stars to miss the holiday period victory against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim says that switching Manchester United's tactical system due to external noise would have meant "the end" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim ditched his customary back three formation with wide defenders and chose to field an traditional back four with two holding midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this ultimately transformed into a six-man defensive block in the closing phase as his team dug in for a crucial result - securing only their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Although he once notably remarked that even the highest authority could force him to tweak his approach, Amorim maintains the ability to utilize varied formations has remained part of his strategy.

However, he stresses he could solely make the switch when his team were doing well enough - otherwise it would look as if he was giving in to outside pressure.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I understood maybe I don't have the players to play well in a back three, but it was the beginning of a project," he commented.

"The goal was to build an style. Currently is a distinct juncture. We don't have a lot of players, and we have to adapt, so they comprehend the reason we are making changes.

"This isn't because of the pressure of you guys, or the faithful.

"Whenever media talk about changing the formation all the time, I cannot make a change because the players will understand I'm changing because of external voices and I feel that is the downfall for the manager.

"Once we are playing well in our system, that is the opportunity to change.

"This will help us grow into a better squad because when all the personnel are back, we are not planning to play with a back three in every match."

Availability Issues Loom Large

Having only two wins in their last eight outings before defeating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is correct to claim his side have been playing well.

He is, nonetheless, working with a severely stretched squad, with seven senior stars already ruled out for the upcoming fixture against winless Wolves.

That figure will grow if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to shake off the injury that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly pressing his manager to allow him to make a comeback after his muscle problem.

"Fernandes is already insisting he has to practice," revealed Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

The Captain's Influence Is Unwavering

However, the 31-year-old will likely continue to be a prominent presence, as whereas most unavailable players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen monitoring the pre-match routines from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to carry on providing input.

"The guy is a natural leader," he declared. "He must not be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and offering advice. He's constantly vocal. That's why he's the captain.

"There are negative aspects at times - the way he gesticulates - but he has a lot of strengths. After he finishes treatment, he goes to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a lot of aspects that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he wants my job or not, but he's a born leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Timeline for Injured Players

Although the exact date for the captain's comeback - and that of other unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is uncertain, by the end of January, United will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
