Jennifer Lawrence Expresses Mentioning Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ Dividing the Nation Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she no longer feels suitable to speak out regarding the Trump presidency, concerned it could exacerbate unhelpful debate and further divisions throughout the nation.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Explains Lawrence
Speaking with media, she commented, “When Trump was first in office, I thought I was moving hastily in a panicked state. But it’s become clear, over multiple voting cycles, Hollywood stars have no real impact in any way on voter decisions.”
The actor went on, “So then what am I doing? I’m just sharing my opinion on an issue that’s going to worsen tensions that’s ripping the country apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has spoken candidly about backing conservative and liberal presidential nominees throughout her life. Brought up by conservative Republicans in Kentucky, she voted for John McCain in 2008 before joining the Democratic party and stating she understood during Obama’s administration that backing conservatives was voting against her personal freedoms as a female citizen.
Earlier Remarks
Several years ago, she stated that a Trump victory could represent “a catastrophic event” and backed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. In the latest campaign, she gave her endorsement to Vice President Harris, “as I feel she’s a strong contender and I trust that she will do whatever she can to defend abortion access.”
Industry Position
Lawrence was aligned with many in the entertainment industry in her disapproval of Donald Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the voting intentions was emphasized by the outcome.
“Another four years appears changed,” noted the actress of Trump’s presidency. “As he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for his first term. He was explicit. And that’s the option selected.”
Current Projects
Jennifer Lawrence is discussing her new film, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she plays a recent parent who struggles with her psychological well-being in rural Montana. During a press conference for the movie in the film festival, Lawrence addressed Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s devastating. What’s happening is nothing short of a genocide and it’s awful.”
Additional Thoughts
Lawrence added by expressing that she was disheartened by “the hostility in the discourse of American politics right now and how that is going to be commonplace to the children right now. It’s going to be normal to them that leaders are untruthful.”
She aimed to shift frustration about the issue to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Keep attention on who is responsible,” she advised, which was interpreted as a allusion to the recent commitment signed by thousands of arts community members to refuse engagement with certain cultural organizations.
Personal Connections
The actor, who earned critical acclaim at a young age for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, is generating Oscar buzz for her work in the new film. Although Lynne Ramsay has rejected the narrative being interpreted as one of maternal mental health issues and psychosis, the actress said that she connected with aspects of her film narrative after the arrival of her second son, soon after filming concluded.
“There was concern for my son,” she explained, “imagining every negative outcome, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was already in therapy, but I started taking a medication called Zurzuvae and I took it for 14 days and it made a difference.”
Professional Experiences
Lawrence also mentioned regarding the liberating necessity of completing nude scenes in the project while she was in pregnancy and couldn’t work out.
“It’s refreshing,” she commented, regarding the need to set aside self-consciousness. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, What technically are the differences between me and a prostitute? But it isn’t a major concern.”
