A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen people were hurt in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews entered the residence in the vicinity of Verona to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was located soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene displayed the property turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, explained the property was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents set off the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander told reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told reporters, adding that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
