European Cup Matches Tonight: Marseille v Newcastle & Additional Games
Greetings to a fresh evening of exciting Champions League football. 9 games are planned for this evening, featuring 3 British clubs in play. The Blues meet Barcelona in the marquee match of the evening, while Newcastle visit the French side and Manchester City welcome Bayer Leverkusen.
Current Standings
We're at the halfway point of the league phase, so the standings is starting to take shape. Each of the six English teams are presently in the upper twelve, however there are only 2 pts between fifth and 16th place, thus there's a whiff of snakes and ladders about the entire situation. Everything is to play for.
Tonight’s Fixtures
Here are this evening's fixtures, each kicking off at 8pm except where noted:
- Ajax 0-1 Benfica (17:45)
- Union SG and Galatasaray level at 0-0 (5.45pm)
- Juventus face Bodo/Glimt
- Barcelona take on Chelsea
- Villarreal meet Dortmund
- Man City v Leverkusen
- Marseille v Newcastle
- Qarabag play Napoli
- Slavia Prague v Athletic Bilbao

Past Meetings
The only previous meeting involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semifinal of 2003-04, won by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have not faced each other previously. Chelsea and Barcelona have some past encounters.
Early Match Updates
Only a single goal during the opening period of the early fixtures. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute sizzler has earned Benfica under Mourinho a one-nil advantage at the Dutch side.
Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille
Even though Newcastle arrived in the south of France fresh from their confidence-boosting 2-1 home English top-flight win over Manchester City on Saturday, and having beaten Union Saint-Gilloise, the Portuguese side and Bilbao in the Champions League, their only away win since early April came in the Belgian capital at Union Saint-Gilloise.
It's not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to discuss the mental side of this away form issue. “The Champions League is different to Premier League games,” said the coach, whose team are sixth in the Champions League standings, with nine points from a available 12 and automatic progression to the last 16 almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”
We have a separate live blog for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the MBM equivalent of Diego Maradona is handling for that.
