Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff win over the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.
Play-Off Decider
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Contenders
Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
